The Art of Disguise

You paint fireflies on your face and pretend to be a galaxy. Eighteen million light years away. “Make-believe,” you say, “is the only way to measure the expanse of my arms.”

Winter settles in right angles over books stacked in the miniature rooms of your heart. You carve a door on your breast. Nail a sign over it that reads “Push" in hieroglyphs. Then wait for me to turn the handle and pull. That will be your excuse to keep it locked. Forever.

Outside, I swallow a mouthful of night, as you repeat in the tongue of nightjars, “Good girls don’t wear garters.”
