New Hampshire to Idaho

6 Sep, 2017, 1242 Through Indiana, Into Illinois

Enter Indiana, where nothing stands between us and the clouds that hang from the sky, between us and the horizon, except billboards. One of the clouds looks like a dragon to me. Nancy says that I have too much imagination. I tell her it’s impossible to have too much imagination.

We cross into Illinois. See wind turbines stretched for miles. I cannot figure out why two face the wrong direction, but it’s clear why they don’t rotate. Not facing the wind.

7 Sep, 2017, 0610 Into Iowa

Drive by Moline, cross the Mississippi River into Iowa. Think of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, his attempt to reach freedom. I don’t cross the Mississippi to escape, cross it for family, but do understand the symbolism. In my youth, if life became too much, I’d pedal the five minutes to the Connecticut River, sit on the bank, let the water relax me. Maybe that’s why I joined the Navy.
