Waiting for the Ferry

Mr. Curry no longer spoke. The surgeon who chiseled away his throat cancer also left him without a voice box, and now he scrawled his statements, questions, and curses on whatever writing surface was within reach.

“I have 2 weeks tops,” he wrote in snaky script along the margin of a newspaper. He started to grin, but one corner of his mouth caught a snag and he turned toward the hospital room window featuring a divided scene of gray sky and concrete.

Six weeks later Mr. Curry was still there, shuffling around in a green terry cloth robe and wingtips. “The trick to sticking around,” he wrote, “is to pretend you’ve got somewhere to go.” He brought the pen up to his lips and blew invisible smoke rings across the waves of fluorescent light.
