Vernal Equinox

As a child when I slept on the terrace with my parents, and looked up into a jet black canvas with shining holes in it, my father would talk about the nakshatras and the stories behind each one. Now the night, bright as day, glows neon, with searchlights scathing the atmosphere, and watching the constellations is relegated to observatories or Sky Watch on my laptop. Tonight, I try to look for Angāraka, "the red one." But since there is no darkness, I cannot see much.

the end of night—
my father’s cataract
excludes the stars

Notes:

Nakshatra is the term for lunar mansion in Hindu astrology. A nakshatra is one of 27 (sometimes also 28) sectors along the ecliptic. Their names are related to the most prominent asterisms in the respective sectors.

Angāraka is also known as Mars.
