With the Tide

An island boy washes into the Big City. Flowered prints. Long, dark hair. Salted accent. He finds his way to a little park with a pond. Turtles bubble. Ducks wend. Under the canopy of trees, Chinese grandmothers harmonize their tai chi. A cadre of Slovenians roll a game of bocce. A cleric presides over his daughters, dark burqas chasing a red ball.

The boy rides the swell of those evenings in the park into manhood. He settles into his place among the now familiar crowds. Perches atop a milk crate beside the pond’s waterline. Clenches a worn paddle. Eyes closed, he reaches and pulls. Reaches and pulls. Stirs the murky waters.
