Animals at the Beach

It's a place our children named, a secluded area of coastline in southern California, where rocks and boulders cover the shoreline at low tide. It's a place where tidal pools provide a haven for starfish, sea anemones, small crabs, where gulls fly low and high, calling and screeching in their search for food. It's a place where we gingerly navigate across rocks slick with lichen and sea moss, where seaweed lies drying in the sun, smelling rank and ready to tangle and trip an unsteady foot, where strong legs and light hearts scramble up and down, stopping every so often to tickle a sea anemone and watch it close or let a small crab crawl on a small hand before returning it gently into its own pool of ocean. It's a place where youth and health were all we knew and cared to know.

ceaseless waves—
an eternal swell
of in and out
as our lives flow
on a finite sea
