Cold Comfort

As part of our study of bison behavior at Wind Cave in South Dakota, we plan to spend the winter. The Park decides they'll try keeping the summer housing open for us. For two weeks in January there's a depth of cold I've not known. Our neighbor puts his wine in the refrigerator so it won't get too chilled. Occasionally I walk at night; not so bad in still air. At thirty below, the deer lie torpid in snow hollows. Once, I was able to walk up and lay my hand on one. Their stoic acceptance is impressive, but perhaps it's merely lack of choice. They've no hope of home and hearth.

bitter winds —
but the shimmer of firs
beyond the stovepipe
