First Deep Snow

Now that I know snow will shield you from winter’s bite, I call on the flakes to float down, layer in yards not feet, drift beside the garden wall and woods’ edge. Shape hummocks of whiteness over the earth.

Now that I know you will never watch snow descend again, I want to savor its stubborn slant, its wind-meandering. To share the black lab’s frolic in the softness under his paws.

Now that you won’t taste snow again, let me coat my lips and tongue, surrender to its melting, experience its sweet release.

another inch of snow
doe and fawn
nibble the silence
