Death of a Baseball Fan

My stepfather’s watch says that it’s almost a quarter past six. But, no, it’s my watch now – his would be set to Pacific time. Mine, this watch whose bold Yankees logo triggers the sense of a fallen colossus.

I know why he loved the sport; it transforms time. Though each team dies save one in dark October, all are resurrected in the spring. Then there are those moments – the home run, the triple play, the dog pile celebration – when time sparkles.

But springtime won't draw the bullet back from his heart, nor unclench his trigger grip. That moment, also, is frozen. It knocks me into the everyday, ordinary stream of chronos – for I know the cost of a life built on visions of future glory.
