What scared me about this storm was the power being off in the August heat, so my husband and I fled to our son’s home in Austin. We planned to be gone for only a couple of days. I thought the news media was exaggerating and expected to find our town of Tivoli, pop. 300, as we left it. Ten days later we returned.

When I walked inside our home, I felt relief and joy. The new roof, put on just weeks ago, held.

Three months post-Harvey, almost every day another person abandons their home because of mold and mildew. They stack their ruined belongings beside the road, anticipating some government or county agency will haul them away.
