Russian Children

I often feel embarrassed when Russian guests come to visit us since not everyone speaks Italian or English, and I don't speak Russian. Olga, my sister-in-law from Moscow, recently visited us with her new boyfriend. Anton is essentially a quiet person, but he knows a little English. Olga is a few months pregnant, but the couple doesn't seem to want to talk about this pregnancy. Anton and I move to the terrace, smoke cigarettes, and despite the language barriers, sometimes it feels to me as if we are on the same wavelength.

One terribly hot afternoon, I try deepening our acquaintance by asking him about his family. With some reluctance, he tells me that he lives with his mother and that his father died during military service when he was a child.
