Rusty Memory

Our train has stopped just outside a small town in North Dakota, the birth state of my parents. Dusk is coming on. Geese, dark against the gray sky, fly over bare trees and a frozen pond. Shadowy grasses blow against the snow. A light appears in the window of a lonely farmhouse guarded by a row of stunted evergreens. This could be my aunt and uncle's place up on the North Dakota-Manitoba border. Suddenly I'm 13 years old again, back in that old stone farmhouse. It's dark outside. I'm standing in the living room. The kerosene lamps are lit. The fire's crackling in the wood stove. I'm afraid to go to the outhouse alone.
