The Other Side of the Moon

We call her Sewer Girl because she loves spelunking in the narrow cement tunnels beneath our neighborhood. No more than seven or eight, she tells us about the strange creatures she discovers there: a box turtle with only half a shell, a mewing kitten that she brought above to save, and scuttling crab-like beings that she believes came aboard a UFO from another planet.

“I’ll give you a tour,” she offers. “For free. I charge the middle-school boys.”

“Into the tunnels?” We question in unison.

She describes the wonders of her underground world: rainbow puddles, a stash of Archie comic books, and when she turns the flashlight off, a darkness deeper than night.
