Move or Die

This week I began jogging. A recent article in the media touting the advantages of running five minutes a day got me moving. Certainly even I can run 5 minutes a day. And if 5 minutes is too much, I can always run less. And that would be nothing.

Lacing up my Nikes, I step outside, without first consulting a physician, like we’re warned to do before starting an exercise program. For a moment, Fear takes over and almost convinces me that I am living dangerously. But without missing a step, I have a quick chat with the Doctor Within, who tells me “You’re over sixty. Move or die!”

Passing under a streetlight, l stare down at my silhouette on the pavement. For a second, I admire my shadowy form, bouncing along in the mist.

It is slow going, and Godot may get there before me, but I am running.
