Juxtapositions

The year my mother got married Cassius Clay was born. So was Jimi Hendrix. A gallon of milk cost 60 cents, a martini 35 cents. The year my mother got married German officials gathered in Wannsee to discuss the Final Solution and Sam played “As Time Goes By” again and again.

The day my mother got married jonquils pushed hard against frozen earth while snow drifted like feathers from an old pillow. She styled her hair like Veronica Lake, lined her lips with scarlet, encased herself in white satin and posed for a photographer.

Years later my husband and I came across that picture in a worn album. She looks beautiful he said. No I said. She looks terrified.
