Crossing Over

In my dream we are going fishing again, just like we used to. Before we got into leps and odes. Before you couldn’t breathe without Conrad, the oxygen concentrator.

Even though we slept on separate river banks, I know you will come and pick me up in the white van. I hear you rummaging around over there, hear you start the car. It comes bumping out. I struggle to dress. To be ready.

But you roll right by me. I see your face through the car window, your light blue eyes staring straight ahead. Jaw set. You drive on down the dirt road ahead of me, the dust spreading up from your tires and settling in the rabbit bush out in the meadow.

to catch
a dragonfly
it takes a net
wind in your face
and a smile

your fly line
stretches out and out
lands in an eddy
far beyond
what I can see

Author's Note: "Leps and odes" refers to the orders Lepidoptera and Odonota.
