Eye of the Needle

On the night Sirhan Sirhan shot Bobby Kennedy in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in California, my mother sat in our red TV room, head bent next to the lamp, and placed a thimble on her finger. She pulled a needle from the plump, scarlet pincushion, held it up to the light, and surrendered white thread to the eye. She held the hem of my prom dress between her left thumb and forefinger. The pocked cap of the thimble thrust the needle and claimed the fabric, sure as an arrow on a prayer mat. "Put it on, now. Let’s see how it looks." I turned, slowly, while she made sure the hem was straight.

a forgotten needle
pricks my ankle
draws a drop of blood
