In the dream, my husband says he wants to leave me and nothing I say—to charm or to threaten—can change his mind. He's adamant, unsmiling, even contemptuous. We're driving home and I shout, “Stop the car—let me out!” He shrugs and applies the brake. The landscape is a flat brown desert stretched to a clouded horizon.

I wake up, afraid there's some truth in the dream and hear him saying unintelligible words in his sleep. Is he dreaming about leaving me? I shake him awake—“what are you dreaming?” “Hm? Nothing.”

“Yes, you were talking in your sleep. I dreamt you were leaving me. Please don't ever leave me!”

“I won't, but I have to right now, to go to the bathroom.”
