Winter Escape

My daughters are chitchatting in the back of the car as we're about to drive past their favorite playground. They haven't been here in weeks, so I pull over. They notice how different everything looks with the bare trees and no one around. I ask if they'd like to get out and play. Both say, "No." They sit in silence and stare out the window.

I too am silent. I'm aware of how quickly the years are passing. I remember exploring the world together with them in their double stroller. Finally, the silence ends. "Daddy. . .Daddy. . ." I turn my head. Both girls are looking at me, waiting. I realize that stopping at the playground was more for me than it was for them.
