Drought

No rain for months in the West Downs Wetlands. Dry earth cracks revealing tree roots.

Thirsty wetlands waits, tree bark hanging in beggars rags. Leaves cling to twigs, curling, abused beneath clear blue sky.

Branches grind in arid wind. More and more leaf stems let go, tangled parachutes spiral earthward. Cleaved limbs of river gumtrees litter the plains.

infested
with squatters
the unburied dead
