. . . and the octogenarian aunties arrive and one settles into a pink flowered nightie and hair curlers and the other’s in a grey sweatsuit and they send me to the liquor store—vodka and tomato juice for the one with hair curlers and cheap hooch whiskey croaks the sweatsuit auntie and Mom says Get bourbon for mint juleps—we’re from Kentucky, remember? and the air is cracker crisp and tall paper bags crunch and the aunties curl up and swill their drinks and the sweatsuit auntie swigs down her vitamin pills . . .
