Da Nang Only in Memory

All that is left are the stories. This spring humidity in a country several thousand miles north east of your 1963 Da Nang draws out the memories. How many nervous gray drizzly days did you ride shotgun in Hueys high over the Annamite Range avoiding artillery fire? Too many, I can only guess judging from the nightmares, consoling alcoholism, and the chain-smoked Camels that eventually killed you thirty-five years later.

I have the highlights tucked deep in my mind stretching back to a time when I was only slightly older than my kindergarten age son is now and a time when the last Americans were leaving your Da Nang. They will not have the color or truth yours did, of ailerons and rotors being blown off, but I will tell the stories nonetheless.
