Still Life

A gravel trail edged with blue asters turns to dirt, flattened, muddied, cracked open by the sun, diminished to dust—an egret bows in silhouette to an algaed pond and a morning haze mutes the memory of water lilies. Only a fish ripple whispers my name.

your voice-shadows
slip into summer rooms
the hum of bees
