Looking

after the photograph of “Young Veteran Soldier in Wheelchair on Porch of Walter Reed Hospital”

The dogwood by the hospital porch begins to lose its foliage after changing its raiment from green to gold and then to flaming red. The leaves, like shards of bloody sunset, drift, glide and land everywhere on the lawn. Day by day their shine turns dark brown. Stirred by a gust of wind, they scurry rustling ankle-high. Today the bare tree offers another charm: robins, cardinals, blue jays and mocking birds leaping, squawking, twittering on the twigs where a few red leaves still dangle.
