"Who wouldn’t want to be a seagull?" he suddenly says.

A short time before, from our rocky perch, we had watched a seaplane take off from Rose Bay across the harbour. We heard it first, the throbbing growl of its engine dominating all the foreshores. Then we watched it slowly rise past Shark Island and head out to sea.

The seagull in question wheeled around in mid-flight, taking a closer look at the patch of water near the fisherman’s line, before swooping back up to follow its mate along the stretch of small sheltered coves.
