It is March again in northern New Mexico and I glance at the next-door garden. A mourning dove lands at the edge of a straw covered bed while a ground squirrel looks on across mute, brown dirt. A mullein rosette has survived its first winter. Sere cornstalks make a restless sound. Any day now, I expect to see my neighbours in floppy hats, testing the well’s pump handle—any day, I will hear their morning chatter through the frayed chamisa shrubs.
