Among the Wild Roses

Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are.

—Alfred Austin

In 1943, a city girl of sixteen when she married and moved to the farm, Mom learned to cook and clean, garden, can, preserve and persevere—to be a farmer’s wife. Dad planted roses along the driveway for her as well as poppies, irises and peonies around the house. The house-beds they managed to keep up with. But the roses grew weedy and overgrown into a hedgerow of mostly common multiflora. As a young child I would hunt to find the occasional cultivated bloom to bring her.
