We join the convoy at sunrise. One more 4x4 numbering off, following the leader, engulfed in red dust, like cows on a track to the river.

engines
thrum through bushland
swarming bees

It’s noon when the ford is reached. Protected by sand drifts on one side and a rocky embankment on the other. Vehicle tyres squeak weaving through sand, scrabbling over rocks and bow waves roll breeching the swift flowing creek. Motors rev over moguls and whoop-de-dos as we practice low-range driving skills.
