After Dinner

I sit with Dad by the nursing home bed while he eats his favorite custard ice cream, stares straight ahead, eyes glassy. I remember stories he told years ago around holiday tables about growing up on the east side of Manhattan, how a neighbor always gave him a glass of milk after he ran errands for her. I wonder if he thinks that's who I am as I spoon-feed him the last few swipes off the bottom of the cup. But then he says my name, "Thank you sweetheart," and a smile crosses his face.
