Sheltering with Bach

Much of the year he spends in a cliff top shelter listening to Bach, his elderly radio pitched moderato just above the sound of the incoming waves. He can no longer play the violin since the stroke reduced his right hand to clutching the sandwiches his carer brings daily. With the left he occasionally conducts, shouting occasionally at a phrase he thinks is incorrectly played. On the rare occasions one of his own recordings comes on, he switches off.

It is not until his funeral, when a memorial concert features his greatest performances, that the musical world commemorates his loss, while the carer sits in the shelter chewing through her memories.
