Souvenir

Brush and ink, black, white, shades of gray, a detail of a Japanese scroll from 1785: five roly-poly puppies, perhaps Shiba Inus, in a field. My version is a 4x6 card. I like it so much I framed it. The original is far larger, part of a collection of Asian art owned by one of the wealthiest men in America. The postcard represents the difference in our income, but I wonder if the busy tycoon has looked as long and fondly at this image as I have: a few lines to shape a body, feathering for fur, the lively eyes and searching expressions on the dogs’ faces, a masterpiece of simplicity, one moment playing captured for centuries.
