Angel Island

So far to travel where she is wanted. She waits with other picture brides from the ship; she is not the prettiest but that doesn’t matter. She married by surrogate in Japan. Now her future home shimmers across San Francisco Bay: a city as crowded as the one she sailed from. Before she can leave the detention island, her American husband must come to claim her and a Christian minister must marry them. Then she too can live in America.

If he has changed his mind, she will be deported. But why would he? She thinks of many reasons, tries to dismiss them. He has spent money for her. In his photograph, he looks thrifty. The other brides are no help; their favorite topics: their husbands and their new life. “Everything is different in America.” So she hears a thousand times. But some things are not different.
